The city of Kostroma and its surroundings are a real find for lovers of historical and cultural tourism. Many of us were frankly bored during history and literature classes in school, and the knowledge that was sparingly deposited in our heads in the form of dry tables and lists of dates creates empty ballast and does nothing for real enlightenment. Visiting local attractions is like inserting bright, colorful illustrations into a grey textbook. For example, once you visit Shchelykovo, you will clearly see where Ostrovsky got his inspiration for the detailed description of the fictional Berendey people (remember his fairytale play, Snegurochka (“The Snow Maiden”)). And just one tour to Plyos is usually enough for most visitors to learn to understand and feel Russian landscape painting.
